YOU  ARE  INVITED  TO  JOIN  US  AND  WE  WELCOME  YOU  WITH   AN  OPEN  MIND  AND  HEART .

WE  OFFER  A  SPECIAL  INVITATION  TO  MEMBERS  OF  THE  LGBT  COMMUNITY  AS  WELL  AS  OTHERS  WHO MAY  HAVE  BEEN  TURNED  AWAY  BY  THE  ROMAN  CATHOLIC  CHURCH.

We are an independent Roman Catholic community.  This means that we claim Catholicism as our denomination but, with exceptions.  Also, we are not yet in full communion with Rome nor the Archdiocese of Detroit.  We understand that the Vatican and the Archdiocese do not accept our claim to be Roman Catholics. However, for many of us, Roman Catholicism is the denomination of our upbringing and roots. We will not abandon her though she has not accepted us. We stand apart from her only because she rejects us. We hope that this separation will some day be healed.  We see ourselves as Roman Catholics in exile.

While we take conscientious exception to the application of some of the theology and practices of the Roman church, we choose to retain that which is true and meaningful according to the documents of the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II).

Also, we reject the style of leadership to which the Roman church clings in spite of the reforms held out by the Second Vatican Council. Shared decision-making, decisions made at the local level rather than in Rome, transparency, accountability, authoritative participation in decision-making by non-ordained persons, etc have been suppressed and co-opted by popes, the curia, and local bishops. Roman Catholics world-wide are abandoning the church by the millions without any meaningful effort by the Vatican or local dioceses to heal this hemorrhage. Local evangelization efforts call people to the same old church without any realization that significant reform is needed.

In addition to those who have actually left the church, there are millions in the pews of Roman parishes who also deny some Roman theology and/or practice. Recent and repeated local and national surveys provide evidence of this fact. It is clear that there is much dissension and disunity within the Roman church in spite of the church’s claim to the contrary. The Vatican and local bishops refuse to accept any responsibility for their part in this dissension.

Not since the 16th century Reformation has it been more clear that the Roman Catholic church is in need of sweeping changes within. The Second Vatican Council pointed the way. Our small community strives energetically to follow its path.

We are an ecumenical community which means we welcome ALL persons of faith and good will whatever that faith or denomination may be.

At the moment, we are also autocephalous which means we are self-governing and under no denominational authority.

WE ARE TRYING OUR BEST TO BE THE CHURCH WE WANT THE CHURCH TO BE.

My name is Jerry Brohl.  I am an independent, Roman Catholic, Franciscan bishop, and the convener of this community.  It is my job to invite and welcome people into our community.

I claim to be an independent Roman Catholic bishop because I was ordained by two independent Catholic bishops who have Roman Catholic lines of apostolic succession and Roman Catholicism is my faith of origin and denomination of choice but, with exceptions.  I was born and raised in the Roman Catholic faith and profess it still.  My progressive views make me unacceptable to the Roman church of the Vatican and its hierarchy.  I have never been a priest of the Vatican's church nor that of the archdiocese of Detroit.  My friend and mentor is Most Rev. Dr. Robert M. Bowman, COSF.  He is the founder, retired presiding bishop, and current primate of the United Catholic Church.  He exercises no control over this community.

The Holy Spirit has brought you to a community who will accept you as you are.  We are committed not only to living with differences but thriving because of them.  When disagreements arise, and they do, we try to deal with them in a loving and peaceful manner.

Our patron is Blessed Pope John XXIII who convened the Second Vatican Council in 1962.  This Council was his attempt to let some fresh air into the Vatican's Roman church.  It was a time of discernment and renewal.
The Vatican has not yet canonized Pope John but they have raised him to the rank of Blessed, the last step before declaring him a saint.

1962 was a time when new possibilities were offered to a church that had stagnated in centuries-old customs and thought while the real world had long ago passed it by.  It was a troubling time for many.  There were those who took the time to pursue new directions while others left the church in disgust over the changes which they perceived as novelty with no lasting value and a betrayal of the faith they held to be unchangeable.  It was a time of decision which changed the relationship of many to the church they had known and loved their entire lives.

As the effects of Vatican II took hold over the next few decades, traditionalists and progressives alike felt dissatisfaction and isolation.  Some felt the church had gone too far, while others felt it had not gone far enough.

It is John XXIII's spirit of openness and new possibilities that drives this community with the guidance of Jesus' Holy Spirit.  Pray with us that we are faithful to that Spirit as we continue on the pilgrim's path of faith!

Please tour our site and find out more about us and how we may serve you.

Pray for us.

Bishop Jerry, COSF
